The Bahamas, My Home, My Eleuthera the Gem of the Islands.

I listen during and after these occur and I am disturbed when people say, “Man I should have gone to that.” or ” I am sorry I did not take my child/grandchild to see that, it was so good.”

Over the past three weeks people of Eleuthera had the opportunity to expose themselves to, Big Cal Bumpin’ Circus, the opening of the BNT Levy Park, the Ride for Hope – the cancer fighting organization. And most missed out.

On the evening of the ‘Ride for Hope’ a grandfather stated to me that he enjoyed himself at the Circus and his biggest regret was that he did not take his children nor his grandchildren. I could only listen and smile. He went on to give praise of the performers and to say how to take his grandchildren to the United States to see the circus would cost him so much more.

Then the Levy Park – Students from other islands have already made plans to come to Eleuthera and see and enjoy the park form an educational point and from a social point of view. Yet the local people here are making excuses after excuses as to why they have not been yet; ‘I’m too busy.’ I have to go to work.’ ‘It’s too far from my settlement.’ These things may be true to a point but when you think of how people go from one of Eleuthera to the next for ‘Homecomings’ and stay for hours, those excuses ‘go out the window.’

The Ride for Hope event was on that more people from Eleuthera could have been involved in. The Cancer Society of Eleuthera benefits everyone on Eleuthera from the North to the South.  Women from Eleuthera were given the opportunity to travel to Nassau for mammograms and the men had prostrate examinations done at the local clinics, these all free of charge. Yet when compared to the numbers of people from outside Eleuthera who were at the ride for Hope, the local people should be ashamed, more could have made an effort to be there.

This week history was made again right here on Eleuthera.  The Pre-schools [private and one government] hosted it first [I hope annual] week of activities for preschoolers. It all started with a church service at St. Patrick’s Anglican Church in Governor’s Harbour, followed by activities at the local Haynes’ Library,a visit by the Yellow Bahamain and on Friday a day of sporting fun for youngsters at the park. More preschools could have been involved. Now look at what we have on Eleuthera.

Folks Eleuthera is the Cradle of the Bahamas. Local need to realise and appreciate that. I can truly say that the visitors to our shores do, ask the second home owners!  There is so much we can do here.

And look at our future and invest in them.

On Friday from 12 noon until 12 midnight, the ‘Back To Ya Roots’ committee and the ‘South Eleuthera Emergency Partners’ [SEEP] Committee would jointly host its first fund raiser to erect an Emergency Complex in Wemyss Bight.

You are invited to come and be a part of this function.

Come and contribute to making South Eleuthera a place where we look out for one another.  This SEEP project will enhance the lives of our people and make life easier for the police and the medical staff of South Eleuthera. This project would mean that an ambulance and a fire engine would be housed at this complex at its completion.

The complex would also ensure that the farmers of South Eleuthera have a place to sell their products and the Artiste would have a place to display and sell their craft.

All from Eleuthera, but especially from South Eleuthera are encourage to come and be a part of this as we move forward as one people.

In Tarpum Bay, the old prep school is being show cased.  This used to be the place where our local culture was showcased. Tonight, Peanuts[Drumbeat] Taylor; Ronnie Butler; John [Chippie] Chipman and Count Bernadino would all be showing the youngsters, our visitors from Boston Ma., students from Clemson University and the locals alike a taste of what is Bahamian Music at its finest.

The farmers and other artiste got a chance to display their wares in Rock Sound at the Market Place.

So despite the economy people here in South Eleuthera are working together to make things work here on the Island of Eleuthera.

And Students are getting excited about the Circus’s first visit to Eleuthera, several of them were passing out fliers to the people of the community, visitors and natives alike to tell them that the Circus is Coming March 30th 2011 at Worker’s House Governor’s Harbour for a mere $25.00; $105 less than the students spent last year to travel to Spanish Wells to take the BoHengy to travel to Nassau for one day to see the Circus. It will be here in Eleuthera where parents can enjoy the event with the children.

A few weeks ago a young lady fell at her workplace.  She had no idea how to deal with work place injuries and so I felt it was my responsibility as knowing to inform her.  I did so. I went further and collected the correct forms for her and had them filled in and signed and taken back to the correct office. Not even a simple thank you, instead poor attitude and blatant disrespect.  If you allow some people’s behaviour to cloud your judgement you would not help others.  You must keep God at the forefront so that you know that it is for HIM that you do good to all man.

Then people who have wronged you over the years and are mistreated by others come to you to help them. What do you do, return the favour of how they treated you or do right.  I choose to do right.  I must build goodwill and fairness and show people how to live, that is not rendering evil for evil.

So daily we must examine ourselves and ask as we make each move, each decision ‘Will it be fair to all concern’ and then ‘Will it be beneficial to all concern’ and if the answer is no, step back and do the right thing.

Today as the world grows ‘smaller’ and we become more and more engaged in each other’s lives,we live not for ourselves but for out children and children’s children including those yet unborn. We live to leave a legacy that will speak for us long after we are gone to the great beyond.  So put ‘truth’ first, be a friend and make a friend even if the persons you befriend don’t know how to reciprocate.

What skills can we teach or expose these young people to in order for them to make some money?

In most high schools the emphasis is on Academics, but not all students go to college… The few high school that teach skills concentrate on electrical installation, auto mechanics, farming, sewing, cooking and the use of a computer.  Now how much is taught to enable the student to secure a job is not clear.

In high school they do not acquire a license at the end of any of these courses. So the skills learn enable them to be apprentices or they must go to a technical school to complete their courses and they obtain the license after taking their exam. In the main time how do they ‘make’ money to live.  Or do they continue to expect their parents to take care of them indefinitely?

High schools must rethink the curriculum.  It must reflect the skills that students need to acquire to enable them to live and work in society.  In these hard economic times skill base is a must.  Business houses must work with the education system to help to project the skills that are needed to fill the spaces that would become available, either through retirement or from workers moving on to a different job or leaving the area.

Now is the time to really look at the situation and plan to work in the best interest of the students.

Yes ‘Summer’ days are long.  You can leave work at 5pm and still enjoy a few hours of peaceful relaxion.

The temperature may be 90 degrees but you can ‘cool off’ and enjoy your entire day or a few hours after work.

Could you imagine awaking every morning to see this magnificent sky? I actually do. I look out of my bedroom window to the east and there it is.

The rest of the day can only get better.

Then before bed time, you look from the living room and see this…

I live in the most beautiful country in the World…

When they were asked to calm down and speak in a quiet manner and go to their respective classes, they were rude and began answering back to the adult in authority who was addressing them. What was more amazing was that they were twelfth graders, soon to be out of school and in the job market. My first thought was that if the behaviour carried over they may well end up in the group of unemployed. Further they may not graduate!  What if they failed the test being put in place for all twelfth graders who are planning to leave school this year?  What then? If they do not graduate and receive a National Diploma and it is a requirement to enter higher education or secure a job what will become of these young men?

Parents may be or may not be aware of the kind of behaviour their male off spring display when out of their presence.  They may be under the impression that all is well and their ‘young men’ are on the right track.  What if they don’t know until the day of graduation?  What if the young men are unemployable? What will they contribute to the society? What would be the contribution they would make?  Yet these questions may not be necessary.  They can turn their lives around and become the men the society can be proud of.

My wish for them is that they realize the situation they are in and that they are at the cross roads and make the right decision.

The issue here, today is how are we, the rest of the world, going to help this poor nation. People in the Capital have lost almost everything if not everything.  People have lost their lives, their homes,their loved ones and there is no water, no food, no electricity.  And, given the type of weather that has been experienced in this area over the past few weeks, how can one survive?  How long can one go with out food? water? a please of shelter.  In the capital, there are NO safe buildings.  People are displaced and families around the world with ties to Haiti are at a loss.

Yes people are getting on the radio and the television to ask for help, but how does one get into the country to ensure the help is received?  What ports are open.  Few of the smaller countries in the Caribbean have the type of helicopters to fly and land to bring food stuff that is eatable now.  If there is no places to live, how can one cook?

The severity of this unusual disaster is more than mind boggling.

Yet, The United States of America, the country that all countries like to point out its faults, is the one country that is truly capable of lending the kind of support and help that is truly needed.  That countries men and women from its military units are ‘expected’ to come to the rescue…  This should make one think.  Instead of constantly talking bad about the USA, maybe we should learn the lesson of the importance of giving, to anyone no matter where they are on this globe.  The United States does just that…

My wish for today is that we all look at the ‘souls’ in Haiti as being our brothers, sisters and children. We must all reach out and give a helping hand.

Yes these are the signs of the time, and it is how we react to them that would make a difference to all of us, no matter where we are in this world.
