Bahamian Sunrise

Bahamian Sunrise

Could you imagine awaking every morning to see this magnificent sky? I actually do. I look out of my bedroom window to the east and there it is.

The rest of the day can only get better.

Then before bed time, you look from the living room and see this…

I live in the most beautiful country in the World…

Are We Losing our Males Unnecessarily?

Today, I spoke to a group of 15 young men who ‘refuse’ to take responsibility for their actions.  They were on their way to school, they were late but instead of being orderly and trying to get to school in a timely manner, they were arguing at the top of their voices.

When they were asked to calm down and speak in a quiet manner and go to their respective classes, they were rude and began answering back to the adult in authority who was addressing them. What was more amazing was that they were twelfth graders, soon to be out of school and in the job market. My first thought was that if the behaviour carried over they may well end up in the group of unemployed. Further they may not graduate!  What if they failed the test being put in place for all twelfth graders who are planning to leave school this year?  What then? If they do not graduate and receive a National Diploma and it is a requirement to enter higher education or secure a job what will become of these young men?

Parents may be or may not be aware of the kind of behaviour their male off spring display when out of their presence.  They may be under the impression that all is well and their ‘young men’ are on the right track.  What if they don’t know until the day of graduation?  What if the young men are unemployable? What will they contribute to the society? What would be the contribution they would make?  Yet these questions may not be necessary.  They can turn their lives around and become the men the society can be proud of.

My wish for them is that they realize the situation they are in and that they are at the cross roads and make the right decision.

The End of Times as we know it!

The world is saddened at the catastrophic situation of Haiti.  The first time in over 200 years an earthquake has hit the region and the outreach is so vast that people of the Bahamas, and Cuba received warning.

The issue here, today is how are we, the rest of the world, going to help this poor nation. People in the Capital have lost almost everything if not everything.  People have lost their lives, their homes, their loved ones and there is no water, no food, no electricity.  And, given the type of weather that has been experienced in this area over the past few weeks, how can one survive?  How long can one go with out food? water? a please of shelter.  In the capital, there are NO safe buildings.  People are displaced and families around the world with ties to Haiti are at a loss.

Yes people are getting on the radio and the television to ask for help, but how does one get into the country to ensure the help is received?  What ports are open.  Few of the smaller countries in the Caribbean have the type of helicopters to fly and land to bring food stuff that is eatable now.  If there is no places to live, how can one cook?

The severity of this unusual disaster is more than mind boggling.

Yet, The United States of America, the country that all countries like to point out its faults, is the one country that is truly capable of lending the kind of support and help that is truly needed.  That countries men and women from its military units are ‘expected’ to come to the rescue…  This should make one think.  Instead of constantly talking bad about the USA, maybe we should learn the lesson of the importance of giving, to anyone no matter where they are on this globe.  The United States does just that…

My wish for today is that we all look at the ‘souls’ in Haiti as being our brothers, sisters and children. We must all reach out and give a helping hand.

Yes these are the signs of the time, and it is how we react to them that would make a difference to all of us, no matter where we are in this world.

New Year’s Hopes and Dreams

What do you hope for in 2010? What are your dreams? Are your hopes to lose that excess pounds you put on during the time centered around Christmas and New Years? The extra fruit cake eaten, the extra cheese cake, the extra wine, the extra chocolates, have they turned into extra pound and inches?
Well, let’s think of what to do to get rid of that extra. Walk- up the stairs instead of taking the elevator; to the corner store instead of driving; walk the malls parking as far away from the entrances as we can.
What about dancing just to get moving. There are many little things we can do to get rid of the extra inches and pounds. Let’s just do it and work on being as healthy as we can.

What does 2010 hold for you?

Well it ‘s 2010 and we made it. Some folk close to us did not. In my church family alone we lost 4 people in less than 10 days, two young and two elderly.  Yes the two elderly ladies achieved their 70 plus years but the young lady and man did not get half of the promised.

The young died from tragedy; one from alcohol poisoning and one from accident. So again  I ask how can we deal with the ‘rage’? Why do young people drink alcohol to the point where they have no control over their physical being.  And after drinking there is no designated driver and they get into the greatest weapon, drive and kill themselves or someone else. What can be done to help this ‘madness’ in 2010?

Young females and males both drink and think they are capable of driving. They drive and the outcome is not only harmful to them but to others.  Innocent people suffer be it parents, siblings, bystanders, children, they suffer. So as we go into 2010, my wish is that people who feel the need to drink would first think, get a designated driver, have money for a cab or choose not to.

I wish everyone a new year full of love, success and goodwill.

Christmas Sunday

Today is the first Sunday after Christmas Day.  Traditionally the church would be ‘full’.  It would be interesting to see how many people are in the service.  On the Eve of Christmas only 35 – 40 people were in church. A shocker.

Today I will observe who finds the time to come.  I can excuse the essential workers, but those who can spend the night in the clubs and partying, I would hope then can at least come for an hour.

Again my wish for the young people is that they stop, evaluate, think and then make the right decision.

Not Everyone Who Prepare for Christmas get to see it!

On Thursday morning December 24th, 2009; a 31 year old young lady in her preparation for Christmas did not make it.

She, was celebrating in the preparations for Junkanoo and left for home in the early morning of Christmas Eve. She nor anyone who had seen her prior thought that it would be her last moments on earth. Driving a mere ten miles to her home she collided with a tree and her vehicle, was severed in two, the exhaust system thrown a few yards from the two pieces of the vehicle.

A person who was travelling directly behind her saw the accident but was too afraid to stop.  He went directly to a brother to tell him about the accident.

The doctor and the police were called to the scene but, it was too late.

See, tomorrow is promised to no one and although we are to live ‘today’ as best we can, we must still be careful in the way we do so.

When looking at the ‘pieces’ of the vehicle you feel within your heart that there was no way she could have lived and if she did she would live in pain.

Would this incident help young people to stop and evaluate what is happening to them and by them? It makes one wonder.

My wish for the young people is…that they Stop, Evaluate the Situation and think again before they act, after the action it could only be regret.

The Accident

This is what speeding does when young people don’t think.

Part of the Car found in the bushes feet away

I trust that this will encourage some youth to think and realize, ‘it could have been me’.
